Life

Background and education Mouton are still in the dark. 1477 he was a canon of the collegiate church of Notre Dame des Nesle ( Arrondissiment Peronne ), where he now ordained to the priesthood on June 22, 1483, was given a seat in the chapter. How long has he had this benefice, it remains unclear as to when and where he has earned a master's degree.

1500 Mouton was maistre of enfans at the Cathedral of Amiens. On September 17, 1501 he was ordered to him at the collegiate St André in Grenoble magister musicus. Among his tasks is to express particularly talented choirboys music lessons belonged. Mid- 1502 the place was deserted, even though they'd Mouton granted a presbyter salary for life from 1 April 1502. Probably the French royal pair has won for the court orchestra during his stay in the city ( 23 to 28 June 1502) Mouton.

Queen Anne tried 1509 several times around a benefice for Mouton to Saint -André in Grenoble; this was Mouton 1510. busy is his attendance at the funeral, who died on January 15, 1515 Louis XII.

In the fall of 1515 Mouton Francis I, Louis accompanied successor, to negotiate with Pope Leo X. to Italy. In the neighborhood of the French king ( in Vigevano ) met Mouton Duke Alfonso d'Este of Ferrara and Adrian Willaert, his former student, who was in the service of Cardinal Ippolito d' Este since July 1515.

In November 1515 Jean Mouton went to Loreto and also visited here Ferrara. As Ferrara was not on the itinerary of the King, Mouton has this journey can not do without the king's permission.

Even Pope Leo X. Mouton extremely appreciated and appointed him Apostolic prothonotary.

In the wake of Francis I Mouton returned in the winter 1515/16 to France. A letter dated April 19, 1518 it can be seen that Mouton was shortly before traveling to Paris to some new works on the occasion of the birth of the Dauphin [ 28 February 1518 to write in Ambroise ], and that there is now waiting for his return to Ambroise. Is notified on 27 May 1518 that Mouton had returned from Paris. And in a letter dated June 14, 1518 shows that Mouton, after he had Ferrara's ambassador handed over new compositions for the Duke that this should show anyone, either, traveled to Picardy, his home on the same day. In addition to Mouton activity at court, these letters also show that Mouton had a residence in Picardy, probably in Quentin; there anyway, he thought - as a successor to the late 1518 Loyset Comperes - a benefice. He probably took part in the meeting in 1520 of the French and the English king.
