Jean-Paul Riopelle

Jean -Paul Riopelle, CC, GOQ ( born October 7, 1923 in Montreal, † March 12, 2002 in Ile -aux- Grues ) was a Canadian painter and sculptor from the ethnic group of Francophone Canadians. He was an internationally recognized representative of Action Painting.

Life

Riopelle studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Montreal. End of the 1940s he moved to Paris, where he met leading artists of Action Painting, Surrealism, automatism, Tachism and Informal who influenced his artistic development.

Beginning in 1945, belonged to Riopelle artist group " Les Automatistes ". In 1956 he met the painter Joan Mitchell, who became his partner. The relationship lasted until 1979. Jean -Paul Riopelle took part in documenta II (1959) and the documenta III in Kassel in 1964.

Pupil and assistant of Riopelle was Michel Vermeulen, who cooperated to 1994 in his workshop, among others, the monumental work "Hommage à Rosa Luxembourg" 1990.

Jean -Paul Riopelle died in 2002 in Ile -aux- Grues in Québec.
