Jean-Pierre Vernant

Jean -Pierre Vernant ( born January 4, 1914 in Provins, France, † January 9, 2007 in Sèvres, France) was a French classical scholar, religious and cultural historian and anthropologist.

He taught at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris and was Professeur honoraire at the Collège de France. His area of ​​research was the Greek mythology and its anthropological implications for the religious and cultural history of the ancient world. He was a student of Louis -Jules Gernet, whose major works he published posthumously, and the first classical scholar, the ' systematically applied the structuralist method Claude Lévi -Strauss on the study of Greek mythology. Together with Pierre Vidal- Naquet and Marcel Vernant Detienne founded the École de Paris called the historical anthropology that seeks to capture the Greek antiquity on the basis of a structural anthropological and sociological overall basis. With his unconventional interdisciplinary work, he found international attention.

Jean -Pierre Vernant was a member of the Jeunesse Communiste and later the French Communist Party (PCF ). He participated as a leading member of the Resistance during the second world war. For the PCF, he stepped out in 1970.
