Jean Shiley

Jean Shiley Newhouse ( born November 20, 1911 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, † 11 March 1998 in Los Angeles ) was an American high jumper. At a height of 1.78 m her competition weight was 61 kg.

1928 Jean Shiley was fourth with 1.48 meters skipped at the Olympic Games. At the Olympic Games 1932 in Los Angeles, she won the title with a world record height of 1.65 meters in front of Mildred Didrikson of the same height. In the playoff Shiley jumped even 1,67 meters, the tie-break but was not recognized as a world record attempt. The world record was surpassed in 1939 by the British Dorothy Odam at 1.66 meters, as a national record of the United States had the record until 1948 inventory.
