Jean Stablinski

Jean Stablinski ( born May 21, 1932 in Thun -Saint -Amand, Nord, France, † July 22, 2007 in Lille, actually Jean Stablewski ) was a French professional cyclist.

Life and work

Jean Stablinski grew up as the son of Polish immigrants in the coal region of northern France. When the father, in 1946, by a work accident, the 14- year-old started in a surface mine in Waller's work to ensure the livelihood of the family. In addition, he earned playing the accordion with a road bike and started the sport of cycling. The mother is said to have the hobby of her son not be tolerated and even smashed out of anger about a bike handlebar. With 16 years Stablinski was naturalized and drove his first race, at age 21 he received his first professional contract.

From 1958 to 1967 he went with his friend Jacques Anquetil in the same teams from 1962 to 1964 with Rudi and Willi Altig.

Stablinski - usually called short rod - was best known for his four-time winning the French Championship and the two-time runner-up in six years, a not again reached until today hit series, which earned him the nickname Monsieur France. In his professional career, from 1952 to 1968, he celebrated a total of 105 professional victories and became world road champion in 1962, whereas he could never win the Tour de France or the Giro d' Italia.

His professional career ended in 1968. After the end of his professional career, he became team manager for six years at the French team Sonolor Lejeune. Among his discoveries were Lucien Van Impe and Bernard Hinault. His son is the 1956 -born Jacques Stablinski, who is also a cyclist was, among other things, drove for the team Gitane Campagnolo and nicknamed Le petit staff received, but could not build on the successes of the Father. Stablinski died on 22 July 2007 after a long and serious illness at the age of 75 years.

Was opened in 2012 in Roubaix named after him Couvert Régional Vélodrome Jean Stablinski.
