Jean Turner

Jean Turner ( born December 23, 1939 in Glasgow ) is a former Scottish politician and party -attached Member of the Scottish Parliament.

Life

Turner attended Hillhead High School and then studied medicine at the University of Aberdeen. Then specialized to the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on anesthesia. In the following years, she worked at various institutions as a doctor and operational 1974-1999 own practice in Glasgow's Springburn.

Political career

After the Labour politician Sam Galbraith returned his mandate for the constituency of Strathkelvin and Bearsden in May 2001 for health reasons, new elections were due in this constituency. After the closure of Stobhill Hospital, Springburn was announced at the political level, however, Turner decided to tackle and applied as a non-party representative of the initiative Save Stobhill Hospital to the direct mandate of Strathkelvin and Bearsden. She received 18.2 %, the second highest share of votes behind the Labour candidate Brian Fitzpatrick. In the regular parliamentary elections in 2003, it increased its share of the vote to 31.1 % and won the direct mandate with 438 votes ahead of Fitzpatrick. In the 2007 parliamentary elections it lost in 2003 compared to 12.7% of the vote and only received the third highest share of the vote.
