Jean Vallerand

Jean Vallerand, CQ ( born December 24, 1915 in Montreal, † 24 June 1994 ) was a Canadian composer, music critic, violinist and conductor.

Vallerand studied from 1920 to 1935 violin with Lucien Sicotte and 1935-1942 music theory and composition with Claude Champagne.

In 1941, he was followed by Léo- Pol Morin after as a music critic for daily Le Canada. In the following years he wrote for Montréal- Matin ( 1948-49 ), Le Devoir ( 1952-61 ), Le Nouveau Journal ( 1961-62 ) and La Presse ( 1962-66 ). From 1942 to 1963 he was general secretary and teacher of orchestration at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec. In addition, he taught from 1950 to 1965 Orchestration and music history at the University of Montreal.

From 1963 to 1966 he headed the music department of the CBC, after he was cultural attaché to 1970, the Government of Quebec in Paris. From 1971 to 1975 he served as Director of Music Education at Ministry of Education of Quebec, next to 1978 as Director of the Conservatoire de musique du Québec. In 1991 he was appointed Knight of the Ordre national du Québec.
