Jeanne Moreau

Jeanne Moreau ( born January 23, 1928 in Paris) is a French actress, film director and singer, whose career has spanned over 120 film productions. She counted in the 1950s and 1960s, the most popular movie stars of the Nouvelle Vague and is regarded as one of the leading character actresses of France. Their most famous role was played by Moreau in the melancholy love triangle Jules and Jim (1962).

Life and work

The daughter of a British dancer and a French restaurateurs studied from 1946 at the Paris Conservatory and continued her education from 1948 to 1952 at the Comédie - Française, where she met the high school of classical theater. She soon proved to be a sensitive, differentiated character actress, such as El Cid by Pierre Corneille and Prinz Friedrich von Homburg by Heinrich von Kleist (both in 1951, alongside Gérard Philipe ). In 1952 she moved to the experimental Théâtre National Populaire in by Jean Vilar, from the following year, she was engaged at various stages and has performed on Broadway. Moreau, who worked in the fifties the reputation of being one of the best actresses of her generation, has been honored with numerous theater prices. Her acclaimed roles include the heroines in George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion and Jean Cocteau's The Infernal Machine (both in productions by Jean Marais, 1954).

In 1948 she made her debut in the film. After minor roles such as in Jacques Becker's When Night in Paris (on the side of Jean Gabin, 1953) had its first major success with Louis Malle's Elevator to the Gallows (1957). By the time very controversial nature film The lovers, also directed by Louis Malle, her breakthrough came a star. This was followed by numerous leading roles in French and international productions, including in films by Michelangelo Antonioni ( The Night ), Orson Welles ( The process ), Luis Buñuel ( Diary of a Chambermaid ), François Truffaut ( The Bride Wore Black), Roger Vadim ( Dangerous Liaisons ), Tony Richardson ( Mademoiselle ) and Peter Brook ( Moderato Cantabile ). Jeanne Moreau was married twice. From her first marriage (1949-1951) to actor Jean -Louis Richard (1927-2012) comes son Jérôme, who is a successful painter today. From 1977 to 1980 Moreau was married to the director William Friedkin. An affair with the director Tony Richardson led in 1967 to a divorce from his wife Vanessa Redgrave Richardson.

In France, Jeanne Moreau is also popular as a singer and in 1964 awarded the Grand Prix du Disque.
