Jebusite

The Jebusites ( Jebusäer ) were according to the testimony of the Old Testament a nation in the Middle East by kanaanitischem tribe. They were at the time of the Hungarian conquest of the Israelites in the hill country of Judah, among other Canaanite tribes, the Hittites and the Amorites, and resident. They should have been fought by Joshua in a battle with the other tribes, but asserted themselves in the fortified city of Jebus ( afterwards the Jerusalem ) nor in the age of the judges.

It was not until David conquered the city in addition to the castle, and the last remnants of the Jebusites, Solomon made tributary.

Historical Background

Science knows neither archaeological nor by extra-biblical evidence for details on these people. Between the reports of the Egyptian Amarna letters around 1400 BC, call a ruler Abdi- Hepa of Jerusalem ( Hapiru ), and the reports of Joshua book gape about 400 years. However, the archaeological evidence shows no significant change in the social and cultural population structures. The inhabitants of Jerusalem dominated the mountain land that was of semi-nomadic, roving and marauding gangs in the Egyptian texts Apiru (possibly the Hebrews ) named populated and filled in the time of David by about 20 solid Iron Age settlements. They made under the protection of Jerusalem's richer cities of the plain with their raids uncertain. Such a picture also still draws the Joshua - book for the group to David and the Jebusites before the conquest of Jerusalem. David was then. Than occasional protector to their leader and ruler It is therefore possible that it was for some time resident population in Jerusalem and the southern mountainous country with them.

Role in the Bible

After the Pentateuch are the Jebusites one of the measures provided by YHWH for destruction by the Israelites peoples:
