History

Documentary forms of the name of the village are: Gicha, Giche, Jicha, Jiche. The name was probably derived from the pagan deity Jecha who had her main sanctuary on the nearby mountain woman.

The highlight of the village is the small village church of St. Matthew in the 13th century, which temporarily not only Matthew, but also had John as patron saint. The church itself is the oldest in Sondershausen still use building. The church consists of a Romanesque choir of the tower, where in 1476 a late Gothic nave was added. The dome of the tower has a pointed roof with four pointed dormer windows.
