Jedaiah ben Abraham Bedersi

Jedaiah Bedersi ( Jedaiah ben Abraham ha - Bedersi, also Jedaiah ha - Penini ) (* around 1270 in Beziers, † 1340 ) was Hebrew poet and philosopher in the south of France ( Perpignan and Montpellier)

He wrote, among other things, the didactic poem bechinat olam ( "Examination of the World"), a popular Jewish morality writing, which was gladly read as a devotional book because of the ascetic- religious coloring. His philosophical writings betray knowledge of scholasticism (in particular the school of Duns Scotus ) and nominalistic tendencies. He defended the authority of secular education and philosophical studies, but advised in case of insufficient training for restraint.
