Jedidiah Morse

Jedidiah Morse ( July 23, 1761 *, † June 9, 1826 ) was an American Calvinist clergyman and geographer.

Life and work

He studied theology at Yale until 1786 and was then for about thirty years pastor in Charlestown (Massachusetts ). Among his numerous friends and correspondents included Noah Webster, Benjamin Silliman and Jeremy Belknap.

When he taught at a school for young women, he realized the need for a geography textbook.

He also provided contributions to Dobson 's Encyclopædia and refuted published in the Encyclopædia Britannica racist views about the Indian peoples.

With three sermons in May 1798, he participated in the conspiracy theories of Illuminati into New England 1798/99 and supported John Robison, who had previously published Proofs of a Conspiracy.

In preparing the maps, he was succeeded by his son Sidney Edwards Morse (1794 - 1871) supported, while Samuel FB Morse (* 1791) more devoted to the art painting.
