Development

The Grand Cherokee was actually developed from the smaller Jeep Cherokee. Its origins date back to the year 1983, when the engineers of AMC designed a successor to the Cherokee. The prototype "Jeep Concept 1 " of 1989, the basic design already anticipated. The Grand Cherokee was the first Jeep with Chrysler emblem, as the concept is indeed came from AMC; the AMC engineers who were involved in this project - later Chrysler employees ( after the purchase of AMC by Chrysler 1987) - wanted to present the car in the late 1980s, but then- CEO Lee Iacocca acknowledged revised Chrysler minivans priority one; thus, the idea of the Ford Explorer competitors Grand Cherokee delayed until 1992.

The Grand Cherokee was introduced in 1992 in grand style at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The former Chrysler President Robert A. Lutz drove the Mayor of Detroit, Coleman Young, the steps of Cobo Hall and up through a glass window to showcase the new product accordingly. Production of the Grand Cherokee began a little later in the purpose-built " Jefferson North Assembly" plant in Detroit and stayed there.

The AMC - line six- cylinder engine with 4.0 liter displacement, with which tow loads up to 2265 kg could be drawn, was also revised; he lost it a bit of performance, but could come up with something higher torque and quieter running. The Limited models had from this year even more luxury amenities, such as a memory driver's seat, remote control of the radio from the steering wheel and a progressive working power steering.

WJ (1999-2004)

The revised Grand Cherokee WJ from model year 1999, only 127 parts in common with its predecessor. The structure was reinforced by Porsche engineering in order to achieve lighter weight and better steering qualities. The spare wheel moved from the side of the load compartment under the load floor, what buyers greatly appreciated. The two heavy VR8 engines with overhead valves ( OHV ) were by a single motor with aluminum overhead cam ( OHC ), Chrysler's then-new PowerTech engine replaced. Although this machine delivered less torque than the two VR8 previous machines, it was easier consumed significantly less fuel and delivered from the same effective performance.

The WJ was the first Jeep following the takeover by Chrysler in 1987, which had " a broader 5 - five - hole circle " five bolt pattern instead of the usual 4.5 in jeep. 5 " bolt circle with five wheel bolts (diameter 127 mm), which first took place on rear wheel drive cars and light trucks and vans from GM, also spread on Ford vehicles, including the Ford LTD ( 1973-1978 ) and the Lincoln models. Chrysler put these bolt circle for the first time in the model year 1986 the Dodge Ram as a large half -ton pickup and the SUV Dodge Ramcharger one.

A remarkable detail of this generation was the automatic four-wheel drive available as an option " Quadra -Drive". He had three fluid couplings and one of the few four-wheel drive systems, then three locking differentials. Among these four-wheel drive systems, it was the only fully automatic, had in common with the former Mercedes -Benz G- models, Mercedes -Benz Unimog Pinzgauer and Steyr, all 100% lockable differentials of axles and propeller shaft.

The Chrysler 45RFE automatic transmission in the WJ was notable. It has three instead of the usual 4-speed automatic transmissions with two planetary gear sets. This allowed theoretically six stages, thus the transmission would have been the first mass produced six - speed automatic; But it was programmed to only five levels were used. Four stages were used for normal driving, an additional second stage occurred when downshifting in action. Although five of the six possible translations were used to Chrysler decided to call the transmission as a " 4- speed automatic ." In the well-known Mercedes diesel Mercedes -Benz five- speed automatic transmission was used, which also came in the eight -cylinder petrol engines from 2002 are used.

In 2004, the Grand Cherokee a year before his replacement again a minor facelift.

This new focus on driving on paved roads led Jeep, the Fixed front axle with trailing arms (as in the ZJ and WJ ) with a construction of double wishbone suspension as presented in 2002 Jeep Liberty to replace. The new Jeep is presented with a new philosophy, which takes account of what is known as Enhanced demand in the SUV market by drivability on asphalt roads in conjunction with a lower demand for off-road capability. Although the new design is perceived as soft on washboard surfaces, the front suspension of the clientele that uses the Jeep off-road, due to the lower axle articulation especially in low-speed maneuvers was criticized on uneven terrain.
