Jeff Ballard (musician)

Jeff Ballard ( born September 17, 1963 in Santa Cruz, California) is an American drummer of modern jazz.

Life and work

Ballard, who has already heard as a child jazz records his father, studied music theory at the local Cabrillo Community College, visited the training camp of Jamey Aebersold and started playing in small bands. In 1986, he moved to San Francisco, where he worked with trumpeter Ray Brown, Smith Dobson and Harvey Wainapel. Then he became in 1988 a member of the band by Ray Charles, where he stayed for three years. In 1990 he went to New York City, where he performed with musicians such as Buddy Montgomery, Lou Donaldson, Eddie Harris, Herman Foster, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Avishai Cohen, Guillermo Klein and Ben Allison ( Medicine Wheel, 1998). Since 1999, it did the collaboration with Chick Corea in various projects. He also toured with Gary Burton and Pat Metheny. He also belongs to the trio of Brad Mehldau, the SFJAZZ Collective, the Elastic Band by Joshua Redman and forms with Mark Turner and Larry Grenadier, the trio Fly. Currently ( 2012) he directs the formation Fairgrounds, which belong to Eddie Henderson, Kevin Hays, Larry Grenadier and Jeff Parker.
