Jeff Davis County (Georgia)

The Jeff Davis County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hazlehurst, which was named after George Hazlehurst, a Colonel and surveyor who had surveyed the line of the Macon & Brunswick Railroad.

Geography

The County is located in the central south-east of Georgia and has an area of 869 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers of water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Toombs County, Appling County, Bacon County, Coffee County, Telfair County, Wheeler County and Montgomery County.

History

Jeff Davis County was formed on 18 August 1905 as the 140th county in Georgia from portions of Appling County and Coffee County. It was named after Jefferson Davis, a U.S. Secretary of War to the Civil War. From there, he was president of the Confederate States of America.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 12,684 people in Jeff Davis County.
