Jeff Rooker, Baron Rooker

Jeffrey William Rooker, Baron Rooker, PC ( born June 5, 1941) is a British politician who sat from 1974 to 2001 as a Labour MP for the constituency of Birmingham Perry Barr in the House. Later, he sat as a life peer in the House of Lords. He spent a year as Minister for Immigration and Asylum Affairs. He left Labour after his appointment as chairman of the Food Standards Agency and now sits as a cross Bencher in the House of Lords.

Early life

Rooker comes from the working class, his father was a factory worker. After school he went to the Handsworth Technical School and College (later City College Birmingham). He spent 14 years working as a production engineer in various companies in the Birmingham area and then Lecturer at the Lanchester Polytechnic. From Aston University him an honorary doctorate was awarded in 2001. He also has a degree at Warwick University. In 1966 he ran unsuccessfully for the city council of Birmingham.

Parliamentary career
