Jeff Widener

Jeff Widener ( born August 11, 1956 in Long Beach ) is an American photographer, best known for his recording of the Tank Man of 1989, during the Tiananmen massacre a series of tanks. He was nominated in the sequence for the Pulitzer Prize in 1990.

Life

Spent his youth Jeff Widener in Southern California, where he studied photojournalism at Los Angeles Pierce College and Moorpark College. He received the 1974 Kodak Scholastic National Photography Scholarship and, beating competitors by 8000. The scholarship included a study tour of East Africa.

From 1978 Widener worked as a newspaper photographer in California and later in Nevada and Indiana. At the age of 25 he took a job in Brussels as a staff photographer for the United Press International. His first foreign assignment led him to the December uprising in Poland.

Over the years he worked in over 100 countries, including civil war areas and focusing on social inequalities. He was the first photojournalist who created digital recordings from the South Pole. From the Associated Press 1987 he was selected as an image editor for Southeast Asia, where he made significant reports in areas such as the Persian Gulf, East Timor, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Burma, Syria, Jordan, India, Laos, Vietnam, Pakistan and many others.

Widener today lives in Hamburg.
