Jefferson Caffery

Jefferson Caffery ( born December 1, 1886 in Lafayette, Louisiana; † 13 April 1974) was the ambassador to the United States in El Salvador ( 1926-1928 ), Colombia ( 1928-1933 ), Cuba ( 1934-1937 ), Brazil ( 1937-1944), France (1944-1949) and Egypt ( 1949-1955 ).

Political career

Jefferson Caffery began his career in international diplomacy in 1911, under the presidency of William Howard Taft, when he joined as second secretary of the office in Caracas, Venezuela in the diplomatic service of the U.S. State Department.

He traveled in 1916 to Persia, now Iran, after the First World War to Paris, along with President Wilson's peace negotiators and then to Washington DC in order to arrange details for the King of Belgium and of the Prince of Wales visit. In 1920 he was named deputy to the ambassador in Madrid. 1933 Caffery briefly served as Assistant Secretary of State under Cordell Hull. During his career, he also served in diplomatic positions of lower rank in Belgium, Germany, Greece, Japan, Persia, Sweden and Venezuela.

Overall Caffery worked 43 years, under the presidency of five U.S. Presidents, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower, in the diplomatic service of the U.S. State Department.

In 1971, Caffery of the Foreign Service Cup was awarded by his colleagues. He has received numerous honorary degrees and awards - considered, including the Leatre Medal of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana in 1954. 1949 he was awarded by the French President, the Grand Cross of the French Legion of Honor awarded.
