Jefferson County (Arkansas)
The Jefferson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Pine Bluff.
Geography
The County is located southeast of the geographic center of Arkansas, and has an area of 2366 square kilometers, of which 75 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:
History
The Jefferson County was formed on November 2, 1829 from parts of Arkansas County and Pulaski County. It was named after the U.S. President Thomas Jefferson.
The county courthouse built in 1838, was used until 1976 as such until it was destroyed by a fire.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Jefferson County 84 278 people in 30,555 households and 21,510 families. The population density was 37 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 48.46 percent White, 49.58 percent Black or African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.66 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.26 percent from other races groups; 0.76 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.96 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.
Of the 30,555 households out of which 33.1 per cent of children or young people under the age of 18 who lived with them. 47.4 percent were married couples living together, 18.8 percent were single mothers, 29.6 percent were non-families. 26.2 percent of all households were single-person households, and 10.6 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size is 3.13 people.
26.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 10.8 percent between 18 to 24, 27.8 percent between 25 and 44, 22.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.9 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males to every 100 females age 18 and over, there were an average of 93.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 31,327, and the median income for a family $ 38,252. Males had a median income of $ 31,848, women $ 21,867. The per capita income was $ 15,417. 16.0 percent of families and 20.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
