Jefferson County (Indiana)

Jefferson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Madison.

Geography

The County is located in southwestern Indiana, on the south by the Ohio River and thus to Kentucky and has an area of 940 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Ripley County, Switzerland County, Carroll County (Kentucky), Trimble County (Kentucky), Clark County, Scott County and Jennings County.

History

Jefferson County was formed on November 23, 1810 from parts of Clark County and Dearborn County. It was named after Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States.
