Jefferson County (Kansas)
Jefferson County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Oskaloosa.
Geography
The County is located in northeast Kansas, in the north about 70 miles from Nebraska, in the northeast about 15 miles from Missouri and has an area of 1442 square kilometers, of which 54 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Atchison County, Leavenworth County, Douglas County, Shawnee County and Jackson County.
History
Jefferson County was formed on 25 August 1855 as original county of the Kansas Territory, and is among the first 33 counties that were formed by the first territorial administration. It was named after Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. president.

According to the census of 2000, there were 18,426 people in Jefferson County. Of these, 259 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 6830 households, and 5190 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 96.70 percent White, 0.37 percent African American, 0.92 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.42 percent from other races groups; 1.41 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.28 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6830 households out of which 35.7 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 65.2 percent were married couples living together, 7.0 percent were single mothers and 24.0 percent were non-families. 20.1 percent of all households were single-person households and 9.3 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.07.
27.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.0 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.9 percent between 45 and 64 years and 12.8 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 102.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 98.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 45,535, and the median income for a family was $ 50,557. Males have a median income of $ 36,174, women $ 25,468. The per capita income was $ 19,373. 5.3 percent of families and 6.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
