Jefferson County (West Virginia)

Jefferson County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Charlestown.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme northeastern corner of West Virginia, is bordered to the south and southeast by Virginia, to the east and northeast Maryland and has an area of 548 square kilometers, of which five square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Washington County ( Maryland), Loudoun County ( Virginia), Clarke County ( Virginia) and Berkeley County.

History

Jefferson County was formed on January 8, 1801 from parts of Berkeley County. It was named after Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Jefferson County 42 190 people in 16,165 households and 11,315 families. The population density was 78 people per square kilometer.
