Jehiel H. Halsey

Jehiel Howell Halsey ( born October 7, 1788 in Southampton, New York, † December 5, 1867 in Lodi, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1829 and 1831 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Silas Halsey was his father and Congressman Nicoll Halsey his brother.

Career

Jehiel Howell Halsey was born about five years after the end of the Revolutionary War in Southampton in Suffolk County. The family moved in 1793 in Herkimer County, where they settled, which now forms the Town of Lodi in Seneca County. There he attended community schools. He then worked in agriculture. Between 1819 and 1821 worked as city clerk ( county clerk ) in Seneca County. Politically, he was a member of the Jacksonian Group.

In the congressional elections of 1828 for the 21th Congress he was on the 26th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded Dudley Marvin and John Maynard took on March 4, 1829 which had previously together represent the district in the U.S. House of Representatives. He retired after March 3, 1831 from the Congress. As a Congressman he had presided over the Committee on Accounts.

After his conference time he was again engaged in farming. From 1832 to 1835 he sat in the Senate from New York. He held the post 1837-1843 as guardianship and estate Richter ( surrogate ) in Seneca County. In 1845 he was supervisor in the Town of Lodi - a position which he held until 1846. On December 5, 1867, he died in Lodi and was then buried in the West Lodi Cemetery. At the time of the Civil War was about two years too late.
