Jelly d'Arányi

Jelly d' Arányi (also Jelly d' Aranyi, * May 30, 1893 in Budapest, † March 30, 1966 in Florence) was an English violinist of Hungarian origin.

Life

Jelly d' Arányi, a great-niece of the famous violinist Joseph Joachim, began as a pianist, before concentrating at the Academy in Budapest as a student of Jeno Hubay on the violin.

1909 joined the Australian pianist Frederick Kelly for the first time with the then 16 -year-old Jelly. You fell in love with him. After his return from Australia in 1912 they gave more concerts together. With the start of World War I in 1914 Kelly signed with the British Royal Naval Division ( Navy ) and was sent to the Turkish peninsula of Gallipoli at the output of the Dardanelles. Here he wrote a violin sonata for Jelly, which he completed in 1916 before the evacuation of Gallipoli. For a relaxing break in London he played the sonata " Gallipoli " for Jelly. He was then sent to the front in France. He fell in the battles of the Somme on 13 November 1916. D' Aranyi played the sonata dedicated to her with pianist Leonard Borwick at his memorial service at the Wigmore Hall on May 2, 1919. She never married and his photo was on her piano, as long as she lived.

After concert tours through Europe and America, they settled down in 1923 as estimated violinist in London. Together with composer Béla Bartók they played there in 1922 and 1923, the world premiere of his two violin sonatas. Maurice Ravel dedicated her 1924 Tzigane for Violin and Piano, Ralph Vaughan Williams Concerto Accademico be a little later. Gustav Holst wrote his Double Concerto for 2 Violins for her and her sister Adila Fachiri ( 1886-1962 ).

Together with her sister she was involved in bringing the long -lost as a violin concerto by Schumann for the 1937 premiere. At that time, occultism very fashionable. They believed in spiritualism and used a Ouija board to come into contact with people from beyond the grave. The sisters wrote in 1933 at the Schott publishing house and told this to have been invited to séances from the spirit of Schumann and Joachim, track and perform the work. The performance rights were, however, in Germany, the Violin Concerto was premiered by Georg Kulenkampff and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Karl Böhm on 26 November 1937. 1938 d' Aranyi played by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the London premiere of the work.

A lifelong friendship she married Georgie Hyde - Lees, wife of William Butler Yeats, who was also devoted to spiritualism.
