Jemnice

The city Jehnice ( German Jamnitz ) with 4,300 inhabitants is located in the Moravian Highlands Region.

The economic and cultural center located on a hill above the river Želetavka. For strategic reasons, and to strengthen the defense, it was founded in 1227 at the behest of King Ottokar I on a rock above the river. However, the construction of the fortification was completed only in the 14th century.

On February 4, 1327, the city of King John received further privileges and became a free royal city. In the 19th century Jehnice was hit twice by the plague and during the fire in 1832 the city center was heavily damaged.

The city is a member of the microregion Jehnice.
