Jens Juel (painter)

Jens Juel Jørgensen (* May 12, 1745 probably in Balslev on Funen, † December 27, 1802 in Copenhagen) was a Danish painter.

Biography

Jens Juel was a pupil of Johann Michael Gehrmans in Hamburg, he attended the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen. There he was - after he had spent his further artistic training six years in Italy and Switzerland - a court painter, member, then professor and most recently Director of the Academy.

Juel painted portraits, in which the half -life bends of the engraver Clemens, Klopstock and Christian VII of Denmark, emphasis is also landscapes and genre paintings.

Among his pupils were German Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge.
