Jerry Apodaca

Raymond S. " Jerry" Apodaca ( born October 3, 1934 in Las Cruces, New Mexico ) is a retired American politician. He was from 1975 to 1979 Governor of the State of New Mexico.

Career

Jerry Apodaca graduated from the University of New Mexico. Then he ran his own insurance agency. As a member of the Democratic Party, he was elected in 1965 for four terms in the Senate from New Mexico. Until 1974 he remained a member of that body.

In 1974 he was elected governor of his state. The focus of his four-year tenure was the reform of the government apparatus. His government was composed of twelve ministries. Some committees were merged or abolished. In 1978 he was appointed by President Jimmy Carter as chairman of a consulting team präsidentialen about physical fitness.

After the end of his term, he published several writings and journals, which turned especially to Americans with Spanish origins. Apocada was also a member of the reserve of the U.S. Navy. Between 1985 and 1991 he was also on the board of University of New Mexico. Jerry Apodaca has five children with his wife Clara.
