Jerry Burns

Jerome Monahan "Jerry" Burns ( born January 24, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan ) is an American former American football player and coach. Overall, he was for 23 years on the coaching staff of the Minnesota Vikings, including six years as head coach.

Career

Burns played four years active as a quarterback at the University of Michigan. After college, he decided against an active football career began in 1951 as a head coach, first for the baseball team at the University of Hawaii. In 1953, he was football coach at St. Mary 's of Redford High School. End of the year he received an offer from the University of Hawaii and joined in 1954 as an assistant coach for the Seahawks. After two years as an offensive coach, he held up to and including 1960, the Office of the defensive coordinator.

In 1961, head coach Evashevski withdrew and took over the office of the athletics director. He ordered Burns as new coach after he called him earlier as the basis of his success coach shaft. After he was in 1964 with a 3-6 balance already under heavy criticism, those responsible for the following season gave him one last chance. The Seahawks were still treated as favorites before the season starts, but Burn managed just one win in nine defeats and was discharged.

Under Bud Grant Burns was offensive coordinator in 1968, with whom he - with the exception of 1984, Les Steckel - worked the following 18 years. He accompanied the Vikings as a coordinator by four Super Bowl appearances and twelve play-off participation.

After Grant's resignation in 1985 Burns was appointed as head coach of the Vikings. He stayed for six seasons, where he reached the playoffs three times. The end of 1991, he entered, at the age of 64 years, as a coach back and ended his career.
