Jerry Schatzberg
Jerry Schatzberg ( born June 26, 1927 in New York City ) is an American film director and photographer.
Life and career
Jerry Schatzberg was born into a Jewish furrier family in the Bronx. Prior to his work as a director in the film business Jerry Schatzberg worked in the 1960s as a photographer for magazines such as Vogue, Esquire, and others. Previously, he studied at the University of Miami. In 1968 he shot the photos for the music album We're Only in It for the Money the group The Mothers of Invention. His first experience as a director, he gained with the production of commercials.
In 1970 he made his debut as a director and screenwriter with the film Puzzle of a Downfall Child, among others with Faye Dunaway in the title role. A year later, he turned the film drama The Panic in Needle Park, a film about a drug- addicted couples in New York. Al Pacino and Kitty Winn took over the lead roles. For this film, Schatzberg was nominated for the first time for the Grand Prix. This he won in 1973 in Cannes with his next film Scarecrow from 1973 ex aequo with Alan Bridges' costume drama message for Lady Franklin. Gene Hackman and Al Pacino in turn played two tramps that enter into an unusual friendship. Schatzberg won for his work, the Danish Bodil for Best Non-European film. In 1976 he turned Sweet Revenge and has been nominated for it again for the top prize in Cannes. In 1980 he turned his musical film On the Road Again, an autobiographical be hewed about and with the country singer Willie Nelson, who was nominated for his music for this for an Oscar. The 1989 film adaptation directed The new-found friend brought him his most recent nomination for the Golden Palm in Cannes. His most recent film titled The Day the Ponies Come Back dates from 2000. For this, he worked for the second time as a scriptwriter.
Jerry Schatzberg staged in his career films from all different genres. So was a strong number from the year 1984, a film comedy and youth film, four years after he turned with Tropic was an action movie.
In 2006, he published a book on Mercury Thin wild Bob Dylan. The work was published by Genesis Publications.
Jerry Schatzberg was and is still active as a photographer and shot photos of famous personalities as different as Robert Redford, Fidel Castro and Sammy Davis Jr..
