Jerry Toth

Jerry Toth (born 15 November 1928 Windsor / Ontario, † March 31, 1999 in Toronto ) was a Canadian jazz musician ( saxophone, clarinet, flute), composer, arranger and producer.

Life and work

Toth, the son of Cimbalombauers and violinist Carl Thoth took in Toronto saxophone lessons with Frank Hiron and learned clarinet with Herbert Pye. In 1953 he studied woodwinds with Dale Iron Huth in Los Angeles. From 1945 to 1953 he played among others in the bands of Stan Patton, Bobby Gimby and Trump Davidson. With trombonist Ross Culley and saxophonist Roy Smith, he led from 1952 to 1957, a seventeen -piece jazz band. Between 1956 and 1974 he was a member of the bands of Phil Nimmons, where he also studied orchestration.

From 1954 played Thot saxophone in the orchestras of CBC led by Jack Cane. In the late 1950s, he was musical director of the CBC broadcast parade, later he also composed jingles for the station. Were known in Canada its instrumentation of the theme for the Hockey Night in Canada, the official theme composed by him for the centenary of Ontario Canada, A Place to Stand, and music for Rich Little's TV show A Christmas Carol. For the CTL label he produced LPs with Bobby Edwards ' Fat City Guitars and with trombonist Ted Roderman.

In addition to several of their LPs Thoth played since 1956, numerous albums as a soloist by Phil Nimmons ' Band and a member of Rob McConnell's Boss Brass, a jazz orchestra; also he was involved in recordings by Jimmy Dale, Gene Lees, Guido Basso, Peter Appleyard and Sammy Nestico. Occasionally he also joined with its own jazz quartet in Toronto. Even his brothers Rudy and Tony Thoth became known as a musician.
