Jersey (fabric)

A Jersey ( in Switzerland: Tricot, tricoter of French, knit ) is a soft, often elastic fabric or knitted from yarns of viscose rayon or Viskosemischungen, wool or wool blended yarns, cotton or silk. It acts similar to a fabric with a slight rib pattern. The name probably comes from the largest and best known of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Jersey.

Jersey fabric is mainly used for clothing such as T -shirts and underwear or bedding. Jersey bedding is smooth, soft, also breathable, absorbent and suitable for tumble drying.

After knitting the following types of Jersey are distinguished:

  • Single jersey
  • Double Jersey
  • Interlock Jersey
  • Jacquard Jersey
  • Cloqué Jersey

Processing

For sewing Jersey a special jersey needle should be used, the blunt tip will not hurt the mesh structure of the substance. To prevent tearing of the seams on stretch of the substance it is also recommended to choose a stitch with more thread length, such as a zigzag or triple stitch, or to work with an overlock machine.
