Jesper Brochmand

Jesper Rasmussen ( also Caspar Erasmus) Brochmand (* August 5, 1585 in Køge, † April 19, 1652 in Copenhagen) was a Danish Lutheran theologian.

Life

Brochmand was born as the son of the mayor Rasmus Sørensen Brochmand ( 1537-1599 ). After studying at the Universities of Leiden and Franeker, put it in 1610, the University of Copenhagen as an education professor. Three years later he took over the teaching of the Greek language. As the successor of Hans Poulsen Resen (1561-1638), with whom he was friends, 1615 went up to a professor of theology, he followed this in 1639 in the office of bishop of Roskilde, which he held until his death at the age of 66 years. 1623/24 and 1629/30 he served as rector of the University of Copenhagen.

Brochmand is counted among the most important representatives of Lutheran orthodoxy. He sat down not only in Denmark against the influence of Reformed Churches, and Jesuits, but worked with his oriented to the Formula of Concord Systema also in Germany. As bishop, he introduced the comprehensive management of church records, abolished the Latin choral singing and founded the mittwöchlichen sermons during Lent. His Piety was still used in the 19th century.
