Life

Svenbros father was a minister and died when Svenbro was a child. The memories of this experience he worked in later works such as My father the pastor. After finishing high school in his hometown of Landskrona he studied Latin and Greek at the University of Lund. Already during his studies he made his debut as a lyricist with the poetry collection Det är det i dag sker ( 1966). His 1969-1970 lasting doctoral studies at Yale University, he sat from 1970 to 1976 at the University of Lund continued. During this time he stayed for three years in Rome before the fresh doctorate Svenbro 1977 moved to Paris to continue his career as a researcher at the Centre Louis Gernet. His dissertation La parole et le marbre (1976 ), which deals with the origins of Greek poetry, he wrote in French and thus sealed his international career in research. Later, the strong cultural anthropology oriented study Phrasikleia (1988 ), which was translated into English, Italian, Modern Greek and German followed.

The poetry of Francis Ponge French was tingens synpunkt (1977 ) interpreted by Svenbro in the work of Ur and translated into Swedish. This source of inspiration changed the direction of his career as a writer and he was the most "pure meta- poet " among Swedish writers, a poet who speaks in his poetry about poetry. He created the continental final stage of the less metapoetischen for more Anglo-Saxon oriented Lundaskola in which Göran Printz - Påhlson in the 1950s, was a central figure of this group of poets from Lund. Svenbro managed a virtuoso treatment of classical and traditional verse forms and he was able to elegantly combine the essential elements of the Nordic and classical Greek mythology, as in Särimner (1984 ) Apollo och andra or Samisk dikter (1993). In between, the collection of poems Hermes kofösaren (1991 ), which is seen as exemplary in the orthodox metapoetischen creative phase Svenbros appeared. In addition to the work och andra dikter Gradiva (1966 ) by Göran Printz - Påhlson it is the metapoetischste all Swedish poetry collections. The early 1990s were not only highlight of his meta-poetry but also its endpoint.

Leaf (1994 ) is a transition book and carries autobiographical childhood. He was followed by the previously most voluminous collection of poems entitled Vid budet att Santo Bambino di Aracoeli slutligen stulits av Maffian (1996). After a three year hiatus accurate and concise word essays have also been published in Swedish - until 1999, his non-fiction published in French - with the titles Myrstigar (1999) and Fjärilslära ( 2002). Myrstigar treated in popularizing way different Greek figures, in contrast to the more scientifically authored work Phrasikleia. Then Svenbro visited the Rome of his youth and wrote the lyrics for the work Ljuset och rummet ( 2004), which is illustrated with photographs of the city from 1949 of the classic architectural photographer Lennart af Petersens. To date, seventeen Antique studies Svenbros Antikt in Swedish in the anthology Försokratikern och andra Sapfo studier i tänkande (2007 ) published.

Svenbro lives in Paris and is Director of Research at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique.
