Jesse H. Metcalf

Jesse Houghton Metcalf ( November 16, 1860 in Providence, Rhode Iceland, † October 9, 1942 ibid ) was an American politician ( Republican), who represented the state of Rhode Iceland 1924-1937 in the U.S. Senate.

Rise in Rhode Iceland

Jesse Metcalf first attended private schools before he went for a few years to England, where he was trained in Yorkshire in textile production. In this area he was later also freelance. 1889 a large part of the estate of Henry J. Steere, he was awarded, who was a business partner of his father and wealthy industrialist.

1888 Metcalf was politically active as a member of the City Council of Providence for the first time; he remained there until 1892. During this time he was 1889-1891 and deputy in the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland, of which he was in 1907 again. Other public offices he held as chairman of the Metropolitan Park Commission of Rhode Iceland from 1909 to 1924 and as a member of the Penal and Charitable Board of the State from 1917 to 1923. Moreover, it was Chairman of the Rhode Iceland Hospital and curator of Rhode Iceland School of Design and Brown University.

Senator

After the death of U.S. Senator LeBaron Bradford Colt Jesse Metcalf was elected on November 4, 1924, his successor in Congress, ending Colts until March 4, 1925 constant term. 1930 was followed by the re-election, so he remained until January 3, 1937 at the Senate; in 1936 he lost to Democrat Theodore F. Green. During his time in the Senate, he served as chairman of the Patent Committee.

From 1935 to 1940 Metcalf was also a member of the Republican National Committee.
