Jesse

Jesse ( Jesse, Hebrew יִשַׁי Jischaj ) is a Biblical person from the Old Testament of the Bible; translated means gift of God his name. He was the father of King David.

Jesse was the son of Obed and the grandson of Boaz and Ruth. After the first book of Samuel, he had eight sons; David was the youngest son. After the first book of the chronicles there were only seven sons of Eliab, and Abinadab, Schima, Netanel, Raddai Ozem and David. His daughters hot Zeruiah and Abigail.

Jesse and his family lived in Bethlehem. In this described in the Book of Isaiah Jesse Christianity attributes the genealogy of Jesus. The spelling Jesse can be found in many Christmas carols (eg Es ist ein Ros sprung ).

According to the Biblical narrative in 1 Samuel Samuel journeyed to Bethlehem to anoint there on behalf of God one of the sons of Jesse as king. Unexpected was God's choice to David. A little later the fallen out of favor with YHWH King Saul sent for David, with the consent of his father to be at the court. Later, Jesse and his wife of David were brought to the Moabite royal court, to protect them from the snares of Saul.
