The inserts were limited to the period of a year ( for international use even longer) and were held at selected locations in Germany, Austria, Eastern Europe, Colombia and Mexico. The volunteers worked with people on the margins of society, such as homeless people, people with disabilities, mothers and children in difficulties, elderly and sick people or asylum seekers and lived in small, supervised by Jesuits living communities. JEV was the voluntary social year comparable and therefore anerkennbar as a community service. According to the Order participated in JEV since its founding about 1,000 young people.

Jesuit Mission Volunteers ( JMV ) was recognized voluntary service without being tied to the "Voluntary social year " and no upper age limit, but also by the BMZ. Completed vocational training was provided for the missionaries on time. With connections to branch offices of the Jesuits in Africa, Asia and Latin America, the volunteers worked in the areas of poverty reduction, refugee assistance, education, vocational training, pastoral work, health care, human rights, ecology and agriculture.
