Jesús Guridi

Jesus Guridi Bidaola ( born September 25, 1886 in Vitoria- Gasteiz, Alava, † April 7, 1961 in Madrid ) was a Basque- Spanish composer. When his most important compositions the zarzuela " El Caserío " would be to call the symphonic work " Diez melodías vascas " and the opera " Amaya ".

Guridi was born in Vitoria in a musical family. His mother María de Trinidad Bidaola played violin, his father Lorenzo was a pianist. He received his first lessons from Escolapios Brothers and Jesuits in Zaragoza. Educate Musically, he settled in Madrid and Bilbao. Already at the age of 18 he attended the Schola Cantorum in Paris, was in one of his teacher Vincent d' Indy. Further stations of his apprenticeship were Brussels, a recommendation Resurrección María de Azkue following, Cologne, with Otto Neitzel.

Guridi married in 1922 and was the father of six children. Since 1940, he worked for the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid and eventually became its director.

Influenced by Wagner and the late romantics, Guridi took significant portions of his inspiration from the Basque folklore. His broad oeuvre includes chamber music as well as choral and symphonic works. Not to mention his work as an organist and composer for the organ. Inspired by the many Cavaille - CollOrgeln in the Basque Country, he created a lot of literature for organ.
