Jesus movement

The Jesus People are a Christian group that in the 1960s and 1970s ( peak: 1971 /72) on the U.S. West Coast took shape from the hippie movement and eventually spread to North America and Europe.

A large part of the Jesus People movement in Germany took Volkhard Spitzer, who was also known as the " Jesus People Pastor ".

The Jesus People taking over part of the hippie ideology, but put them in a new context: From the " free love " was for example the free love of God and man ( agape, charity ). In her lifestyle, the Jesus People oriented on early Christianity. Most Jesus People lived in communes, an exception was among other things the Calvary Chapel movement. They had a strong belief in the supernatural, in signs, wonders and possession and exorcism.

With the demise of the hippie culture, the Jesus People lost their importance. The Jesus People USA are among the last groups of the movement. Also in Germany there are some minor Jesus People communities. Closely related to the development of the Jesus People are the Jesus freaks.
