Jewett is a city in Leon County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located on Highway 79 and Farm Road 39 in the northwest corner of the county, in east-central Texas and has a total area of 5.4 km ², of which 0.1 km ² water surface.

History

The town was founded in 1871 by the International Railroad Company and named after Henry J. Jewett, a then prominent judges and politicians.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 861 people in 333 households and 223 families. The population density was 161.4 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 75.15 % White, 7.67 % African American, 0.00 % Native American, 0.00 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 14.87 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.32%, Mixed Race and 23.58 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 333 households 38.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.1 % were married couples living together. 14.4% were single mothers and 33.0 % were non-families. 30.0 % of all households were single-person households, and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size amounted to 3.22.

31.6 % of the population were under 18 years old, 10.1 % from 18 to 24, 27.4 % 25-44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years or older. The average age was 31 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 87.6 males.

The median income for a household was $ 26,250, and the median income for a family $ 33,500. Males had a median income of $ 31,667 versus $ 20,347 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,469. 26.4 % of the population and 21.4 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 29.7 % have children under the age of 18 and 21.0 % of those 65 or older.
