Jewish courtyard

The Judenhof Speyer was the central district of the medieval Jewish quarter of Speyer and consisted of the men's and the women's synagogue as well as that obtained in Central Europe 's oldest mikvah, the ritual immersion of the Jews.

The men's synagogue was built in 1100 and added the woman synagogue little later. The mikvah dates from this period. The site was no longer used after 1534 and fell into disrepair. The new synagogue of Speyer at the Maximilian street, built in 1837, was destroyed during the pogroms of November 1938.

Of the buildings, the east and the west wall of the men's synagogue, the eastern wall of the synagogue woman and the underground parts of the mikvah are still preserved. The Jewish courtyard was transformed into a center of Archaeology 1998/1999.
