Jezero (crater)

The Jezero Crater is located in the south of the planet Mars. It was founded long ago by a meteorite impact. This spun-on layer silicates respectively phyllosilicates on the surface of the planet; they are still available today. In the underground, formed at 100-200 ° C numerous clay minerals, which is possible only in the presence of water.

The existence of the so-called Jezero Crater Lake is assigned to the period before about 4 billion years ago. Its catchment area consisted of about 15,000 km ² and its tributaries led him to numerous suspended. By the deposition of material wide planes that are interpreted as deltas created. The crater lake covered approximately 500 km ², and also contained an outflow of deposits of sediments left behind. 3.8 billion years ago there probably were still open water. Later, a climate change set in, so that the liquid water froze almost entirely to ice cream or evaporated, and the hydrogen of the water evaporated into space.

The crater was named in 2007 by the IAU to town Jezero in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where " Jezero " in Serbian means "lake".
