Moormerland in the district of Leer

Jheringsfehn (often misspelled Iheringsfehn ) is a Fehnsiedlung in the community Moormerland in the district of Leer in East Frisia. The town has about 2,500 inhabitants. Mayor is Arnold Eyhusen (SPD).

Geographical position and natural space

Jheringsfehn is a series of village that stretches along the Jheringsfehnkanals and its northwest-southeast -running side arms ( Georgswieke, Rudolfswieke, Old and New Bekswieke Bekswieke ) at heights from 2.4 to 3.5 meters. The village is located about two kilometers east of Warsingsfehn and about four kilometers west-northwest of Hesel on an area of 10.33 square kilometers.

History

The first settler was Paul Harsebroek, a dike Commissioner of Emden. He earned a 1641 about 25 acres of bog land, the so-called Bullenmeede for 100 rix-dollars. The area was then on ( the corner) called de Hook, as it is in a corner between Boekzetelerfehn and Neuefehn. On October 16, 1660 Harsebroek concluded with the state government an annual lease agreement for a further 100 Diemate morass. Revenue from the peat remained low, so Harsebroek fell into increasing financial difficulties, the ground lease could not pay, and finally in 1741 was bankrupt. In the subsequent bankruptcy proceedings acquired Rebecca Ritzius Dam, born Warsing, the lands of the Harsebroek heirs. Ritzius transferred the land in 1742, her son, the government and Kammerrat Sebastian Eberhard Jhering. Jhering knew the ground that he had surveyed in 1739. Until the incorporation on January 1, 1973, the town belonged to the district of Aurich ( Ostfriesland).

Population Development

The population increased after the Second World War by the inclusion of displaced persons from the former eastern territories of the German Reich sharply. In 1946 they made 224 of a total of 1966 inhabitants, which corresponds to a share of 11.4 percent. This ratio remained stable in the following years.

Culture and sights

Jheringsfehn is a typical Fehnort whose townscape is dominated by the classical channels.
