Jiang Hu

The fictional world of Jiang Hu (江湖) is the scene, playing many of the wuxia stories in the. Literally translated means Jiang Hu " rivers and lakes " and identifies every wild and uninhabited region. In medieval China outsiders and outcasts often fled to the settlement boundary.

The term Jiang Hu goes back to the novel Outlaws of the Liang Shan - Moor (水浒传) by Shi Luo Guanzhong Nai'an and from the 12th century, in which a gang of outlaws retreats to a hiding place in a swamp and from there leads a guerrilla war against corrupt officials.

Today, the term Jiang Hu refers to the world of secret societies and triads. He specifically refers to the totality of the people who live by the code of honor of the triads.
