Jibert

Jibert ( Seiburg German, Hungarian Zsiberk ) is a municipality in the district of Brasov in Transylvania, Romania.

The place is also known under the outdated names Romanian Sibert, Şiberga and Jibergu.

Location

Jibert is located 14 km west of Rupea ( Reps ) on the connecting road towards Fagaras ( Fagaras ).

History

The place is a settlement founded in the 12th century by German immigrants, the Saxons, who was mentioned as Villa Syberg the first time in 1289. From 1250 the construction of a Roman church adopted. From the year 1348 a Saxon school is demonstrated. In 1450 the bell tower of the church was converted into a defensive tower. 1604 had to be rebuilt after a fire in the church. Already in 1676 the whole place with church was the victim of a fire again and had to be rebuilt again. 1868 the foundation stone was laid for the construction of a new church, which was completed by 1883.

In 1786 1274 people lived in the village. In 1966 there were 1087 in 1992 from the population of the Transylvanian Saxons were still 145 people in Seiburg. ; since this number is further declined sharply. In a review of the evangelical church members in 2009 for Seiburg 57 members are counted.

All resorts in the community Jibert are strongly influenced by agriculture and the residents earn their main livelihood.
