Jilbāb

Jilbab (plural: Dschalabib, Arabic جلباب, Ǧilbāb DMG ) is a used in the Qur'an word for a piece of clothing that women should wear. Today is no longer to determine with certainty what was at the time of Muhammad understood jilbab. However, the term originally refers probably only on a sewn the body einkleidendes robe, not a mere cloth - which contradicts a current use for abaya or chador. Koranic reference text is V.A.

" Prophet! Tell your wives and daughters and the believing women, they are ( as they exit ) to pull down some of her robe ( over the head ). So it is most likely to ensure that it be known (as respectable women) and are then not bothered. But God is merciful to forgive and ready. "

For " robe " is here in Arabic, the plural of Ǧilbāb. The " pull " of Paret with transmitted verb may, inter alia, also be transferred to " bring closer ", so that a meaning as " the garments put on tight to the body " could result. In earlier legal literature, the resulting standard is specified in different ways, based for example by Ibn ʿ Abbās after report of Mahmud Alusi also to a coverage of the face.
