Jim Brewer (blues musician)

James Brewer, better known as Jim Brewer ( born October 3, 1920 in Brookhaven, Mississippi, † June 3, 1988 in Chicago, Illinois) was an influential African-American blues singer and guitarist. He was often called "Blind Jim Brewer " - an accessory that when blues musicians is not unusual though, he has never accepted for himself ("My mother did not name me ' Blind ', she named me ' Jim' ". )

Born in Brookhaven, Mississippi, he moved like many of his compatriots in the 1940s to Chicago and spent the rest of his life here (mainly in the Maxwell Street) to earn as an itinerant street musician with blues and gospel music his money. Since the folk and blues revival of the 1960s, he often played next on blues and folk festivals.

His music has been handed down to posterity on various compilations as well as records on two of his own albums. He appeared in four documentaries:

  • Mike Shea's " And This Is Free" (1964 )
  • "Blues Like Showers Of Rain " (1970)
  • "Big City Blues " (1980)
  • " Maxwell Street Alive ( 1981)

Jim Brewer died at the age of 68 years in Chicago, Illinois.
