Jim Jontz

James Prather "Jim" Jontz ( born December 18, 1951 in Indianapolis, Indiana, † April 14, 2007 in Portland, Oregon ) was an American politician. Between 1987 and 1993 he represented the State of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Jim Jontz attended the common schools and then studied until 1973 at Indiana University in Bloomington geology. He then studied at Butler University history. Jontz campaigned for the environment. So it was in 1974 and opponents of a dam construction project in Indiana. He was director of the Lake Michigan Federation and Indiana Conservation Council and director of public Sycamore Girl Scout Council. He also taught temporarily at Butler University.

Politically Jontz member of the Democratic Party. Between 1974 and 1984 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Indiana; 1984 to 1986 he was a member of the State Senate. In the congressional elections of 1986 Jontz was in the fifth electoral district of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Elwood Hillis on January 3, 1987. After two re- election he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1993 three legislative periods. There he was a member of the Committee on Agriculture, the Committee on Education and Labor, the Veterans Committee and the Select Committee on Aging. Jontz campaigned for the preservation of the forests in the northwestern United States. In 1992 he was not re-elected.

After his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives, he moved to Oregon, where he continued to fight for the preservation of the local forests. He became director of the Western Ancient Forest Campaign. In 1998, he became president of the liberal interest group Americans for Democratic Action. Jim Jontz died on April 14, 2007 of colon cancer.
