Jim Knight

James Philip "Jim" Knight, Baron Knight of Weymouth, Weymouth in the County of Dorset of ( born March 6, 1965 in Bexley, London Borough of Bexley ) is a British publisher, cultural managers and Labour Party politician.

Life

Professional and local political activities

After the visit of Eltham College Knight studied Geography, Social and Political Sciences at Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge and was after graduation, first from 1988 to 1990 Manager of Central Studio in Basingstoke, then director of the West Wiltshire Arts Centre Ltd., and most recently between 1991 and 2001 Director of Dentons Directories Ltd.

In addition to his professional activities, he began in the 1990s, his political career in local politics and was between 1993 and 2001 Member of the City Council of Frome, a small town in Somerset, whose mayor he was between 1998 and 2001. In addition, he was from 1997 to 2001 and a member of the District Council ( District Council ) of Mendip and there at first vice chairman, and from 1999 to 2001 Chairman of the Group of the Labour Party.

House of Commons Member of Parliament and Minister

After he strove in the lower house elections of 1 May 1997 as the candidate of the Labour Party unsuccessfully in constituency South Dorset seek a seat in the House of Commons, he was at the general election of 7 June 2001 in this constituency for the first time for the Members of the House of Commons chosen and this was one until 2010. During his membership of Parliament, he was first a member of the House Committee on Defence and then from 2003 to 2004 Parliamentary Private Secretary to Rosie Winterton, Minister of State in the Ministry of Health, and then Parliamentary Private Secretary to the representative of the Ministry of Health in the House.

In the general election, 2010, he also suffered a personal defeat and lost the constituency of South Dorset to his conservative challenger Richard Drax, so he had to resign from the House of Commons. In the election, he scored more than 5,000 votes and 11.3 percentage points less than in the general election of 2005.

Member of the Upper House

After retiring from the House, he became the life peer with the title of Baron Knight of Weymouth, Weymouth in the County of Dorset of charged and has since been the House of Lords on.

At first he was spokesman for the opposition Labour Group for Work and Pensions and is since 2011 Opposition Spokesperson for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. In addition, he is since 2010 Vice- President of the Union of Local Authorities ( Local Government Association ).

He is also a member of the Board of various companies such as the consulting firm Step-A International Ltd, Egale Limited and Alderwood Education Ltd., both of which deal with educational projects. He is also a board member of the Society Ltd. Fanshare of Arsenal FC. He is also a trustee of the Institute of Education Business Excellence and the e- Learning Foundation.
