Jim Mitchell (politician)

Jim Mitchell (* October 19, 1946; † 1 December 2002 ) was an Irish politician and as such deputy and minister.

Mitchell was elected in 1977 for Fine Gael in the Dáil Éireann. Previously, he had from 1976 to 1977 held the office of Lord Mayor of Dublin. As a Teachta Dala he was on 30 June 1981 to March 9, 1982 Minister of Justice and from 1982 Minister of Transport and Minister of Posts. 1984, the Ministry of Postal Services was replaced by the Ministry of Communications, so Mitchell was appointed Minister of Communications. He held until 1987, his two ministerial posts. In the 2002 elections, he could not defend his seat in Dáil Éireann.

Family

Mitchell was married and had five children. From Mitchell's siblings and his brother Gay Mitchell embarked on a political career and was, like his brother, Lord Mayor of Dublin and Teachta Dala.
