Jim Schoenfeld

Jim Grant Schoenfeld ( born September 4, 1952 in Galt, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (defender) and coach, for the Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins played from 1972 to 1985 in the National Hockey League.

Career

As a player

During his youth, he played for the London Knights, together with Darryl Sittler, the Hamilton Red Wings and Niagara Falls Flyers in the OHA. There he fell to its hardness and determination, and was selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the NHL Amateur Draft 1972 in the first round in fifth place.

Right in the 1972/73 season he made ​​the jump to the NHL. A neck injury prevented him from playing a large part of its second season. In the third year it fell on mainly by his 184 penalty minutes. His best season was 1979/80, in which he played in the NHL All-Star Game after 1977 again. In December 1981, he joined together with Danny Gare to the Detroit Red Wings, the charges the Sabres for Mike Foligno, Dale McCourt and Brent Peterson.

In the 1983/84 season he played for the Boston Bruins before he returned to the Buffalo Sabres.

As a coach

During his last season in Buffalo, he ended his active career to the AHL farm team, the Rochester Americans to train. A year later, he was standing behind the band of the Sabres in the NHL. However, under general manager Scotty Bowman, he was the post already mid-season release. From the season 1987/88 he trained for two and a half years, the New Jersey Devils. During this time he was suspended for insulting referee in the playoffs.

During the season 1993/94 he took over the Washington Capitals and remained there until he joined the 1997/98 season to the Phoenix Coyotes moved. From 2002 he was assistant coach of the New York Rangers.
